Halima from Balkh Province, Before the Taliban, I was a civil society and women’s rights activist. I was studying law and political science at Balkh University and working in art departments. But the Taliban stopped me from finishing my studies.

Despite this, I kept my spirits up and tried to help other girls. I secretly created a class to teach art, like painting and calligraphy, to lift their spirits. Sadly, the Taliban found out, closed my class, and warned me that these activities were forbidden. My students were devastated, with nowhere to go and are struggling with depression and anxiety.

The Taliban have taken all our happiness. We’re not allowed to study, work, or help ourselves and others. We’re really tired of this situation.

I want to start my activities again, but my family won’t let me. They fear for my safety and insist I stay hidden. Now, I must stay quiet, watching as our lives go to waste.
