ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

What does home mean when public life is no longer accessible?

Scenes of Home under Gender Apartheid is a two-week photography exhibition featuring the work of 21 Afghan women and girls.

Through intimate photographs of everyday life, the exhibition explores what care, sanctuary, belonging, and humanity mean under Taliban rule.

Captured in homes and other private spaces, these photographs offer glimpses into lives that are often hidden from public view. They show how women and girls continue to create, connect, care for one another, and imagine a different future for Afghanistan.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE IMAGES

Everyday life. Private spaces. Personal perspectives.

For many Afghan women and girls, restrictions on education, employment, movement, and public life have transformed how they experience the world.

Yet within homes and other private spaces, life continues.

21 WOMEN. 21 PERSPECTIVES.

Life, identity, home, and hope.

The exhibition brings together photographs by 21 Afghan women and girls, offering different perspectives on life, identity, home, and hope.

Each photograph tells a personal story. Together, they create a broader picture of Afghanistan through the eyes of those living through its current reality.

WHY THESE STORIES MATTER

A space for their perspectives to remain visible.

When women and girls are pushed out of public spaces, their visibility can disappear with them.

This exhibition creates a space for their perspectives to remain visible.

Through photography, Scenes of Home under Gender Apartheid brings attention to the everyday realities, relationships, and hopes that continue to exist behind closed doors.
